It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since we moved in and began living in our home full-time. We still didn’t have kitchen countertops or a proper place to store our food at the time, but plywood and plastic shelving sufficed. The final parts and pieces slowly came together, but—much like the primary suite—there were still lots of little tasks on our punch list: touching up paint, finishing trim, hanging artwork…
And then life got busy. Really, really busy. And even when we deep cleaned the kitchen, it didn’t stay looking clean for very long. But I deep cleaned this weekend, remembered to grab the camera and finally documented our labor of love.
If you’ve been following along, you’ll remember the original kitchen featured seven-foot ceilings, red plaid wallpaper, and tiny orange appliances. A true time capsule from the 1970s. We reimagined the layout with the goal of creating ample prep space for cooking, a dedicated space for coffee, a large island for entertaining friends, and plenty of pantry storage. That led to removing a wall, raising the ceiling, replacing a bay window with regular windows, partitioning off part of the dining room for a pantry, and closing up the broom closet with a built-in hutch.
For the finishes, we aimed to stay true to our home’s colonial style while reflecting modern living. The space features wood tones, creamy neutrals, natural stone and aged brass, alongside modern chrome, matte black and clean lines.
I’m so happy with how our kitchen turned out. To put it simply, it feels like us. Whether drinking coffee in the mornings or catching up in the evenings after work, we spend a lot of time in the heart of the home.
Check out some photos of the finished space and let me know what you think!
