The Kitchen: The Finishes (Part 2)

Similar to our game plan for the other spaces in our house, we wanted our kitchen to feel true to our home’s colonial style while reflecting modern living. To us, that means mixing using traditional and modern materials to create a space that feels warm and lived in. Reviewing our inspiration photos, they all included the same things: wood tones, creamy neutrals, natural stone and aged brass, alongside modern chrome, matte black and clean lines.

Before I get into the finishes, if you missed the download on the floor plan you can read it here.

After looking at more cabinet samples than I can count, we settled on a creamy greige for the outer cabinets, and a warm wood finish on the island. A simple shaker profile will create clean lines, and the panels on the island will mimic a piece of furniture. And, after looking at way too many options, we decided that warm, aged brass cabinet knobs and pulls are the perfect accent. While we haven’t picked our countertops yet, we know we’re looking for a light quartz with large, but light veining.

Our appliances and sink are stainless steel, but our plumbing fixtures are a traditional profile in a modern chrome—the best of both worlds. The hood vent over the range will be the star of the show, covered in a faux plaster treatment to create texture, and the rest of the wall will feature counter-to-ceiling tile. I haven’t picked the specific tile yet either, as it will be dependent on our final counter selection, but I’m envisioning something timeless and classic in a subway or square shape.

The two large pendants over the island are a gorgeous rattan, and we’ll be adding a pop of black with barstools and a built-in hutch I scored from Facebook Marketplace. I’ll tell on myself though: I mis-measured and the piece is too wide for the spot where it’s going, so we’re in store for a more involved project than I initially planned.
