The Primary Suite: The Finished Product (Part 3)

If you’ve been following along, then you know we turned our first-floor bonus room into our new primary suite. We bought our house in March 2023 and promptly began working on creating a bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet in the large space, and moved in mid-September 2023. However, it took six more months before the primary suite truly felt “finished.” Spoiler alert: I’m so happy with how the space turned out. It’s calming and cozy, just like we envisioned.

If you missed the download on the floor plan, you can read it here, and if you want to see my inspiration for the furniture and finishes, you can check that out here.

Before I dive into the details, here's a quick reel showing the before and after.

The Bedroom

In the bedroom, we laid a wide-plank engineered hardwood, which we’ve also used throughout the rest of the house (in fact, we’re in the process of installing upstairs now!) The walls did, in fact, end up being a creamy white, with a board and batten accent wall in a cool sage green. For the furniture and decor, we mixed old pieces with new items. We already owned the rug-–a Loloi rug I love so much that I ordered it in a larger size for our living room—as well as the nightstands, dresser and lamps. Our cane bed is new, adding the perfect amount of texture and warmth to the space, and I once again ordered my trusty Arlo bamboo roman shades and linen-look ikea curtains that were in our last house. I mixed in a few vintage pieces, too, for character: the wooden arched mirror over our dresser was my late grandmother’s, and I thrifted a handful of vases and frames.

(Apologies for the low-quality iPhone photos. Our “good” camera is still packed away somewhere in the black hole that is our upstairs. I’ll do better next time—promise!)

The Bathroom

The bathroom ended up looking almost exactly like my mood board: gray floor tile laid in a herringbone pattern, white subway tile in the shower and tub area, creamy white paint on the walls, and a wooden vanity with a carrara marble top to add warmth to all the cool tones. I went with Delta’s “Cassidy” collection in chrome for the plumbing fixtures; they’re a classic silhouette made slightly more modern by the finish. For added character—and needed storage—we added my late grandmother’s hundred-year-old pie safe to hold towels and toiletries. Not only do I love the look, but it’s a sweet daily reminder of her.

(Again, apologies for the low-quality iPhone photos!)

We’ve been moved in since September, but it took a while for the space to feel like “home.” I’m happy to say we’re feeling settled and enjoying the sanctuary of our primary suite. A little status update: The majority of the first floor is done, with the exception of all the cabinetry in our laundry room. Upstairs is another story; we’ve completed one bedroom, the bedroom being used for my office is 75% of the way there, and many of our belongings are still in boxes in another bedroom. The full bathroom and half-bath have been completely demo’d (thanks Dan!) and mostly plumbed (thanks Dad!), however they’re still studs and subfloor. The last bedroom, which will eventually be Dan’s studio, is currently the holding space for tools and supplies, and may or may not look like a scene from a horror movie.

I’m hoping to share a look at our finished kitchen and pantry next. Once again, it took a while to get everything just right. Until then, cheers!
